There are 38 colleges and 6 permanent private halls (PPH) in Oxford. PPHs were founded by various Christian denominations and are smaller and admit fewer students. The oldest (hotly debated) is probably University College, Balliol College or Merton College founded in the 13th century while the newest is Green Templeton College formed by the merger of Green College and Templeton College in 2007.
